As a business owner, you’re the person in charge and making sure that things get done. And, as a business owner, you likely have some trouble giving up control and delegating tasks out to your team. You might even be a bit of a control freak.

But it’s nothing to be ashamed of! To run a business, you need to have your finger on the pulse of everything that’s going on. Your inner control freak is actually one of the key elements to your success.

But every successful business owner  knows that no matter how talented, organized or together they are, they simply can’t do it alone. They need to delegate things out to their team. And, as we’ve discussed, one of the areas that you absolutely need to be delegating to make your life easier is your graphic design.

But how do you delegate and communicate effectively to get exactly what you want from your graphic design partner?

 

Understand Their Motivation

People are motivated for a number of reasons – and believe it or not, money is towards the bottom of the list.

Understanding WHY your graphic design partner (and your team in general) is motivated will help you understand HOW to delegate to inspire their best work and get exactly the design that you’re looking for.

For example: Let’s say you’re working with 2 designers on your graphic design partner’s team on upcoming marketing campaigns. You are working with Bill on campaign #1 and Jane on campaign #2.

Bill’s main motivator is autonomy in his work. He HATES being micro-managed and works best when his clients trust him to get things done independently and in a way that makes sense for him. So to delegate to Bill, you would be most successful in giving them the design specs, setting a deadline and letting them run with it.

But Jane’s main motivator is positive feedback. She needs a lot of encouragement and for her client’s to give her real time feedback and let her know when she’s doing a good job. So to successfully delegate to Jane, you’d want to give her the design specs and consistently review and give feedback on her work, give her detailed notes to give her the direction she needs and celebrating minor successes along the way.

Same design task, totally different delegation style. Understanding your graphic design partner (or partners), what motivates them and what makes them feel successful is going to go a long way in getting their best work and the design that you want.

 

Practice Crystal Clear Communication

Just as important as how you delegate is how you communicate. In order to get people’s best work and end up with a design that works for you, you need to practice crystal clear communication.

Designers tend to be creative people, and you want to give them a certain amount of creative freedom when working on your projects. But you also want to give them all of the details that they need to bring your design to life exactly how you envision it, and you want to give them those details in the clearest way possible.

When you’re briefing your graphic design partner on your design specs, give them as much detail as you can. Let them know where they’re free to be creative (like in choosing the fonts) and where they need to strictly follow the design spec (like color schemes to match the overall branding of your company). When you’re giving directions on what you’re looking for, you should feel as though you’re over-explaining; this level of detail will ensure that you and your graphic design partner are on the same page and you get exactly what you’re looking for.

 

Avoid Micromanaging

This can be a tough one, but once you delegate something to your graphic design partner and get them all of the information that they need, it’s best to take a step back and give them the space they need to work. No one, including your graphic design partner, likes someone breathing down their neck.

Instead of sending hourly emails to your graphic design partner asking what shade of green they chose for your new marketing card or what size font they’re using on your website, set clearly scheduled project deliverables and then trust your partner to get the work done.

Extending that trust to your graphic design partner and giving them the space to do their job is going to motivate them to do their best work. If they feel like you’re constantly micromanaging and have to be involved in every detail of the project, they’re going to feel like you don’t have confidence in them, which can have an effect on the quality of work they deliver.

Delegation is truly an art form, and it takes letting go of control and giving your graphic design partner the chance to step up, work their magic and deliver exactly the type of designs that you’re looking for. But while it’s tough, mastering this skill is KEY to taking your design – and your business -to the next level.
