How To Choose The Right Blog Topics

With over 150 million active blogs on the internet today, people are absolutely overloaded with information. And whatever industry you’re in, you can be sure there’s a ton of blogs already putting out information.

So how do you stand out from the clutter? How do you choose the right blog topics that will get you noticed in your niche?

 

Know (And Ask) Your Audience

The thing about blogs is that they’re subjective. You could write an absolutely amazing blog post that you spent weeks perfecting, but if it’s not right for your audience, you’re not going to see results.

Knowing your audience and the type of blog posts that would be interesting and informative to them is the foundation of choosing the right blog topics. It sounds simple, but a major mistake that many new (and seasoned) bloggers make is writing the content that they want to write rather than writing the content their audience wants to read.

So how do you get to know your audience?

Read and respond to their comments. See what they’re sharing on your social media channels. Ask them what interests them, where they need help and what questions they have.

 

Bring Entertainment or Bring Value

Or better yet, bring both.

Your blog topic and headline and your one shot to grab your audience’s attention and break out from the massive amounts of blogging clutter that exist in your niche. A run of the mill topic just isn’t going to cut it anymore.

If you want to grab your audience’s attention (and keep it there to actually read your blog), you need to bring something to the table in the form of entertainment, value or both.

So, for example, say you wanted to write a blog post about the rising real estate prices in Sydney.

A great topic/headline if you wanted to be entertaining could be “The Good, The Bad, and The Wildly Expensive: Horror Stories From The Sydney Real Estate Market”.

A great topic/headline if you wanted to bring value could be “The Sydney Real Estate Bible: Understanding The Rising Market And How To Make It Work For You.”

And a great topic/headline if you wanted to be both entertainment and value driven could be “Sydney Real Estate For Dummies: A Step-by-Step Guide To Buying A Home (And Not Getting Ripped Off) In The Harbour City”.

The point is, you need to make your topic stand out to catch your audience’s attention. Choose a topic that they’re going to be enticed to read because they want to be entertained, educated or both.

 

Keep Keywords In Mind

Ideally, your blogging strategy is just a small piece of your overall digital marketing strategy, and you’ll want to make sure that everything you do on your blog is getting you closer to reaching your overall marketing goals.

When you’re choosing blog topics, definitely keep your target keywords in mind. While you don’t want to overuse keywords in your copy (Google will actually penalize you for what they call “keyword stuffing”), you’ll want to write about topics that allow your keywords to come up organically.

If it’s possible to get a keyword into the blog post title, even better.

 

Keep It Current

If you’re struggling to find a topic to blog about, read some industry news for inspiration.

Current happenings in your industry are a great place to pull blog topics from. If something new is happening, you can bet that your readers will want to know about what’s going on and where you and your business stand on it.

So, for example, say that a new marketing platform launched that your industry is abuzz about. Purchase the program, and then write a detailed review and tutorial for your readers.

Or maybe one of the leaders in your industry released a new book with some controversial ideas about business standards in your niche. Write a blog post responding to the ideas and how your company feels about them.

Pulling blog topics from current events in your industry will keep your blog fresh and show your audience that you have your finger on the pulse of what’s going on in business.

Once you start choosing the right blog topics, be patient. It’ll take time, but before you know it your readership – and business – will start to grow.
